  4. A huge, howling storm sweeps across the U.S. and lashes the
  5. East Coast
  6.

  8.     Early Americans lived in fear of a Nor'easter howling in from
  9. the Atlantic. Modern Americans see nature as well under control
  10. and react with indignation when it is unchained. So it was last
  11. week, with holiday schedules busy and tempers already frayed, as
  12. one of the fiercest storms of the century hit the East Coast.
  13. Record coastal floods and snowfalls -- nearly 3 ft. in parts of
  14. West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts -- resulted when
  15. a 170-m.p.h. jet stream collided with a storm that had caused
  16. tornadoes in California, then skimmed along the Gulf Coast and
  17. out to sea before doubling lethally back. Though it was no
  18. Hurricane Andrew, at least a dozen people were killed and many
  19. thousands evacuated -- some from flooded rail stations and Wall
  20. Street lobbies. Hundreds of thousands lost power. Among the
  21. pervasive damage: windows sucked out of New York City
  22. skyscrapers and a century-old fishing pier swept away in Ocean
  23. Grove, New Jersey.
